SEM and SEO

In this article, we explore Google’s new  & exciting “Notes” feature in Search Labs to let users add comments and insights on search results. The question is will this replace reviews?

Now, you can check out and share tips right alongside your search results. They spilled the beans on this exciting experiment in last month’s company updates.

This is getting launched via Google’s Search Labs, where they give us a heads-up on new stuff before it goes global. It’s like a VIP pass to try out experimental features and test out some cool capabilities that haven’t reached the entire world just yet.

 How will Notes work

If you’ve opted in through google search labs you’ll see a notes button under certain search results and discover articles in the google app.

Now, you can check out and share tips right alongside your search results. They spilled the beans on this exciting experiment in last month’s company updates.

Pressing the button will reveal notes left by others about the page

“You can also create your own notes to share your expertise with the world,” – Brad Kellett, Senior Director of Engineering for Google Search.

These notes may include text, photos, stickers. Google is planning to add AI-generated images to notes as well.

Don’t worry, it won’t be the Wild West

Google has assured that these notes will follow strict guidelines on content safety and quality so we don’t need to worry about a lawless platform where anyone can write anything, they will no doubt have a rigorous test and learn phase to see what works best before releasing to all.

Will this replace or push down reviews?

Reviews are a vital part of SERP and SEO so the initial concern is that these notes will replace reviews or push them further down the pages on search results. Google has stated “In the months ahead, we’ll actively explore ways to provide site owners insights into notes on their content. We understand this is an important need for websites, and we’re committed to working with them to determine what tools and insights will be most beneficial.”

Whilst not a definitive answer, it’s something we’ll monitor and incorporate into our SEO strategies moving forward
