TL;DR
- Google Ads and Meta Ads default to automation settings that favour spend and reach over your specific business outcomes.
- Turn off Google's auto-apply recommendations and review account-level automated asset settings before they alter your ads.
- Watch what Meta's opportunity score, Advantage+ audience, and default placements do to your targeting before accepting them.
- Set negative keywords, exclusions, and brand controls before enabling AI Max, and audit every creative AI enhancement toggle.
- Reviewing these settings regularly, rather than accepting the defaults, is what keeps AI-assisted spend working for your business.
Google and Meta have evolved from ad platforms into automation engines. Switch on the AI, let the machine work, watch results improve. It is a compelling pitch, and the platforms genuinely want advertisers to succeed, since better results mean you keep spending.
But these platforms default towards maximising spend and expanding opportunities to spend more, and those defaults are not always in the interest of the brand investing the budget. Left configured to their defaults, Google's AI and Meta's AI will optimise towards their broad volume metrics: more clicks, more impressions, more auction activity. Whether those clicks become customers sits in a different part of the equation entirely.
The goal for any marketer is to spend on your own terms. That means understanding where these platforms hand control back to the machine, then choosing deliberately which handoffs you actually want.
Google Ads: The Settings You Didn't Know You Had Agreed To
Turn Off Auto-Apply Recommendations
The Google Ads recommendations tab holds toggles that let Google change your account automatically. It is easy to inherit accounts where every one of these is already switched on:
- Automated ads and assets
- Automated keywords
- Display expansion
The damage rarely comes from one catastrophic setting. It comes from a gradual stack of automated decisions that erodes clarity until you can no longer diagnose what is driving performance. Open the recommendations tab, find auto-apply, and opt out of all three. Review recommendations manually, on your own timeline.
Check Account-Level Automated Assets
This setting is genuinely hidden, buried several layers deep in the "More" menu. It controls automated sitelinks, callouts, seller ratings, and business information that Google attaches to your ads without prompting you.
ADMATIC worked with a winery client whose ads showed poor seller ratings they never chose to display. Google had pulled the data in automatically, so the brand was paying to broadcast its own weak reviews.
Write Every Headline to Stand Alone
Google's responsive search ads mix and match your headlines: sometimes showing just one, sometimes repurposing a headline as a sitelink. A headline that only makes sense alongside its siblings will eventually appear alone and confuse the reader.
Write every headline as a complete, standalone message, then use headline pinning to lock your most important lines into fixed positions.
Set Guard Rails Before Enabling AI Max
AI Max expands your reach beyond existing keywords and pulls content from across your entire website to build ad experiences.
ADMATIC recently saw a sponsored result surface for a stock sale from 2021. The promotion had ended years earlier, but the page was still live, so Google's AI treated it as fair game, and a customer clicking that ad expects a deal that no longer exists.
Before enabling AI Max, put negative keywords, URL exclusions, and brand controls in place first, and audit your site for stale pages and outdated offers.
Google Ads Quick Recap
- Turn off auto-apply for automated ads, keywords, and display expansion.
- Check account-level automated assets for sitelinks and seller ratings.
- Write standalone, pinned headlines.
- Set guard rails before enabling AI Max.
Meta Ads: Defaults That Default to Broad
Ignore Meta's Opportunity Score
Meta's opportunity score nudges you towards Meta's own recommendations. Set it aside entirely. The score measures how closely your account matches Meta's preferred setup, and chasing it pushes you towards broader spend and less precision. Build your own metrics and measure against those instead.
Know What Advantage+ Audience Changes
When you enable Advantage+ audience, your predefined targeting becomes a suggestion rather than a boundary. Meta serves ads to audiences it deems similar, including demographics outside your set parameters, and age and gender controls can effectively be overridden.
This is where your data quietly skews. Audiences over 60 tend to scroll and click at higher rates, inflating engagement metrics without delivering the business outcomes you need. Your dashboard looks healthy; your pipeline tells a different story. Until you have genuinely exhausted your core audience, moving into new segments prematurely rarely serves the business.
Take Manual Control of Placements
Meta defaults to selecting every placement available, including Threads and the Audience Network, which takes your ads outside Meta entirely into third-party app environments with limited visibility and context control.
Select placements manually and exclude the Audience Network as a starting point, especially when launching a new campaign.
Audit the Creative AI Enhancements
Most of Meta's creative enhancements are switched on by default:
- Branded content cycling
- Image touchups and text optimisation
- Overlay additions and visual touchups
- Music, relevant comments, enhanced CTA brightness
Each one gives Meta permission to alter the creative you already approved before it reaches your audience. For larger brands, this is a brand safety concern, since creative went through legal review and the AI edits it in the wild. One thing worth knowing: AI-generated images of your own team members can look completely different from the real people, which matters if your brand relies on recognisable faces.
Meta Ads Quick Recap
- Ignore the opportunity score and measure against your own metrics.
- Watch what Advantage+ audience does to your targeting.
- Select placements manually and exclude the Audience Network.
- Audit every creative AI enhancement toggle.
AI Is Only as Good as the Constraints You Give It
The automation inside both platforms is genuinely powerful, and there is real value in using it well. The goal is not to fight the machine, but to configure it so it works for your business, not around it.
Google and Meta default towards volume because volume is measurable and consistent with how their systems are built. Your business optimises towards revenue, margin, and customer quality. Those goals align well when you set the right constraints, and drift apart when you accept the defaults as given.
Spending your investment on your own terms means reviewing these settings regularly and actively choosing whether each one belongs in your account. It is a small amount of work that compounds significantly over time.
